Interested in learning about shoemaking? Join us for an evening with Tenderfoot Softgood's Fiona Scarborough. This reservation includes dinner and supplies.
Are you curious about how shoes get made? In this introductory evening, local artist Fiona Scarborough will cover some of the history and present state of footwear within culture, it’s functional considerations, and the construction and materiality of many classic and contemporary shoes. Then, you will participate in demonstrations of cobbling skills at various stages of the process and learn how to create a miniature replica of a sneaker--the size of a keychain!
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Fiona Scarborough is a Massachusetts-based creative and aspiring shoemaker with an industrial design background. Much of her work is informed by her love of her queer community, and her journeys through fashion, sports, and gender exploration. She is inspired by movement, craft, and self-expression, and she is currently seeking a unique life path to center her passion for shoemaking and footwear design. Inclusivity in fashion is a perennial discussion, especially in apparel design. However, rather than pay it lip-service when convenient, Fiona wishes to make it the guiding principle of her career.
Her ultimate ambition is to create her own size and gender inclusive footwear line.
As part of her partnership with the Harvard Ed Portal and Artisans’ Asylum, Fiona is working to develop shoemaking workshops she can offer in a variety of settings, from afterschool programs to bridal showers and corporate gatherings. A MassArt grad with experience working for Reebok, Fiona is currently looking for work in the realm of fashion design, softgoods development, bike repair, or art education.
Fiona is part of the 2024 Artist Pipeline Program at the Harvard Ed Portal.
