Sights + Sounds of Allston-Brighton: Community Workshop

Date:

Thursday, November 18, 2021, 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Location:

Harvard Ed Portal (outdoors), 224 Western Ave., Allston

Join artists Allison Tanenhaus and Maria Finkelmeier at the Harvard Ed Portal to participate in the public art project FREQUENCIES: Allston-Brighton!

On view at the Harvard Ed Portal from November 4 – February 28, FREQUENCIES is an audio/visual mural that features crowdsourced material from around Allston-Brighton. At this workshop, you’ll learn how to capture the beauty that is all around you—like the sounds of your best friend laughing or images of the 501 bus rolling down Washington St.

Workshop participants will meet outside the Harvard Ed Portal at 5:00pm to experience the artwork and hear about the project directly from the artists. Then, we'll move to the nearby area to find inspiration and capture your own Sights & Sounds!

Bring any device you own that can record video, audio, or images (like a smartphone, tablet, or digital camera). If you don’t have access to a device, don’t worry! We’ll have a few on hand for you to borrow.

After you’ve captured your media, you’ll have the chance to contribute the content to the artists as source material for FREQUENCIES. If you choose to contribute, the artists will give credit to everyone that participates (yes, your name will be projected in lights!).

All are welcome! If you need special assistance please contact the Harvard Ed Portal at edportal@harvard.edu or call 617-496-5022. Staff is available to speak in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

Inclement Weather Plan:
If the event can not be held outdoors on November 18, the workshop will be held virtually via Zoom. The Ed Portal will contact you by 10 a.m. to confirm the location of the event and, if needed, will send a Zoom link at that time. Participants will still have a chance to participate in the project and capture sights & sounds from their indoor spaces.

Want to learn more? Take a look at the artists’ website for FREQUENCIES: Allston-Brighton! and see the behind-the-scenes process for how they transform raw footage.

FREQUENCIES: Allston-Brighton! will be on view at the Harvard Ed Portal from November 4, 2021 – February 28, 2022. Mark your calendar to go see it at 224 Western Ave. in Allston.
